CHURCH WORLD SERVICE HYGIENE KITS

The donations for hygiene kits are WAY down!! Come on Immanuel... let's continue our generous tradition of supplying these much needed items to those facing natural disasters, violence or poverty throughout the world!!

To assemble Hygiene Kits, donations of the following supplies are needed:

  • Hand towels measuring approximately 16" x 28" (no fingertip or bath towels)
  • Washcloths
  • Wide-tooth combs
  • Nail clippers
  • Bath-size bars of soap in wrappers
  • Individual Toothbrushes in original packaging
  • Standard size Band-aids®
  • Gallon-sized Ziploc bags

A collection bin and poster will be located in the narthex for the collection of these items. Thanks once again for your generous support of this mission project.

We're ready to get to work!! The High School Class would like to offer a helping hand to the Seniors of Immanuel this summer. If you have a project you want us to tackle, or know of someone who does, please fill out the S.O.S. Request form in this month's Visitor. There is also a signup sheet on the bulletin board.

We will contact you as soon as possible to schedule a workday. If you have access to email, feel free to send your request to LChandlerIUCC@aol.com be sure to include all information listed below.

• P.S. Don't need help? Join the S.O.S. team and offer your services! Please speak with Linda Chandler — we would be happy to put you to work too!!

Mission Committee - April 2010

This month we would like to highlight: OCWM - the acronym for "Our Church's Wider Mission". This year the funds message is entitled, "Changing Lives". The money we give to this special offering will go to fund both local and global mission projects that make a difference in people's lives. You should be happy to hear that your donations are distributed and managed most efficiently. I encourage you to visit the ucc.org website to read firsthand accounts of how your gifts make a difference. You can learn how the UCC partners with other Protestant denominations, like the Disciples of Christ and the Presbyterians, to better meet the needs of an area. Of course, the Disciples of Christ are better known to all of us as our friends from First Christian in Highland. So, just as we come together for special worship services, know that our denominations work together to change lives. Visit ucc.org, then search "OCWM" or select "Global Ministries" on the sidebar for some inspiring stories.

Secondly the Mission Committee wishes to thank all who brought in prom dresses and seasonal clothing. Karen and I delivered a van full of Immanuel's contributions. We received hugs and thanks from Edwina and her team of volunteers at Trinity UCC in Gary. We got to see how the women had transformed Trinity's multi-purpose room into a boutique. Gowns were arranged by colors on multiple clothing racks, and there was an area for shoes as well as accessories. The women had laid a red carpet runner in front of a three-way mirror so girls could really get a feel for how they would look in the various gowns. Volunteers were going to offer tips for hair and make-up too. The whole set-up was really quite impressive. We were happy to help some high school girls have the opportunity to really "shop" for their prom dress, rather than simply be given one.

Trinity's next clothing give-away will be in August. We can help them continue this worthy mission by continuing to bring in seasonal clothes. They especially would like to get young children's and youth's clothing for back-to-school. Edwina also asked that we consider collecting school supplies this summer, so families can come in and "shop" for their school supplies. Immanuel's Mission Committee will leave the large box in the narthex for your contributions.

USED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

The Mission Committee would like to thank you for your donations of used medical equipment to the relief effort in Haiti. A total of 1 wheel chair, 2 canes, 5 pairs of crutches, and 5 walkers were donated to the cause.

Thank you,
Mission Committee

Clothing Donations

When you do your closet cleaning, be sure to bring your seasonal clothing and shoes to the church.  This will be an on-going collection.  The Mission Committee will deliver the items to “Somebody’s Closet”, the clothing ministry at our sister church, Trinity UCC, in Gary.  Items should be bagged or boxed, and dropped off in the high school classroom.

Thank you for supporting this very worthy cause.

Aluminum Can Recycling

Thank you to everyone who is bringing in their aluminum cans!! Every little bit helps. Save the environment and contribute to the High School fundraising efforts. Drop off your aluminum in the can in our classroom, the tote in the West Hallway, OR if you have BIG bags, you can leave them on the East side of the building near the storage shed. PLEASE rinse and, if possible, crush them first — we are thrilled to recycle and put the money in our class fund! Thank you!

Immanuel U Can Contribute

Continue to bring ONLY the following  recyclable items to church and deposit in our 'recycling center' in the west hallway. Every little bit helps our planet and our community!!

  • Newspapers/Catalogs/Cardboard/Phone Books

  • Aluminum Cans* (please rinse and crush, if possible)

  • Printer Cartridges

  • Cell Phones

  • Hearing Aids

  • Eyeglasses

  • Non-Perishable Foods/Canned Goods

  • Campbell’s Soup Labels/

  • Box Tops for Education

  • Junk Mail/Bulletins

  • Support our Troops Campaign Items

  • Gently used shoes donated to Share Your Soles

*Aluminum can also be left near the storage shed on the East side of the building or placed in the garbage cans inside the door of the high school classroom. Yes, we can take ANYTHING aluminum — baking pans, hubcaps, refrigerator drawers, foil, etc.... as long as it is all aluminum (magnet WILL NOT stick to it). Please do not put in with the aluminum cans — these items must be weighed separately and paid at a different rate.

THANKS AGAIN.
